Phi Alpha Theta
Welcome to the Yale Chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta Honors Society!
Phi Alpha Theta is an undergraduate society whose purpose is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. It seeks to bring students, teachers, and writers of history together both intellectually and socially; and it encourages and assists historical research and publication by its members in a variety of ways.
Phi Alpha Theta is composed of chapters in properly accredited colleges and universities. All students in these institutions who have completed the required number of history courses and are maintaining high standards in their college or university studies are eligible for membership.
Alpha Epsilon Gamma Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at Yale University is open to undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:
- completion of at least 4 History courses at Yale University
- grade point average of 3.0 at Yale University
- history grade point average of at least 3.1 at Yale University
- payment of a $45 membership fee
- attendance at two lunches
Upon induction, members receive a certificate from the national organization and a year long subscription to The Historian, Phi Alpha Theta’s national journal that includes submissions from professors and college students around the country.

Events and Officers
We are holding a series of lunches with History professors in order to get to know them in a more personal setting and to learn about anything ranging from their current research to reasons why they became historians to experiences in graduate school. Past discussions have included talking about violence in nineteenth century frontier Los Angeles with Professor John Faragher and discussions with Professors Jonathan Spence and Cynthia Russett.
