Jonathan Gebhardt
I am a second-year graduate student in early modern global history, with a focus on the Spanish and Portuguese empires and China. I am interested in studying the commercial relations between Iberians and Chinese in the South China Seas, particularly in Manila and Macao, in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. I would like to explore the systems of cross-cultural communication that developed in each place, and examine the role that such systems may have played in establishing peaceful trade or fueling episodes of violence. My primary advisor is Francesca Trivellato.
