Octavie Bellavance
I study the social, cultural and intellectual history of Russia in the long nineteenth century. My research interests include émigré communities and cultural identities; the circulation of information and the transmission of knowledge; state censorship and illegal publications; popular political awareness, the growth of the reading public, and the development of a public sphere; as well as opposition to the tsarist regime and revolutionary organisations. Whilst researching my master's paper, I have developed a keen interest in the Russian émigré press during Alexander II's reign, and wish to pursue this line of inquiry at the doctoral level. Such a project would allow me to examine the themes mentioned above, as well as the role of the media in Russia's public and political life, an issue equally fascinating to examine in today's Russia.
I hold an undergraduate degree in Russian Studies and History, as well as a master's degree in European History, both from McGill University in Canada. Originally from Montreal, I have had the chance to also call St. Petersburg, Berlin, London and Paris home. I am always happy to talk about Russian history, life as an expat and the great game of hockey.
