William E. Metcalf was educated at the University of Michigan, where he received his Ph.D. in Classical Studies in 1973. The same year he began his professional career at the American Numismatic Society, where he was Curator of Roman and Byzantine Coins and, from 1979-2000, Chief Curator and Director of the Graduate Seminar. In addition to teaching in the departments of Art History and Archaeology, History, and Classics at Columbia, he has taught at Princeton University, Rutgers University, New York University, Bryn Mawr College, and the Università degli Studi di Padova. He was most recently (2001-2) Visiting Associate Professor of Classics at New York University. At Yale he is also in charge of the Art Gallery's collection of coins and medals.

Metcalf is the author of two books: The Cistophori of Hadrian (1980), The Silver Coinage of Cappadocia, Vespasian-Commodus (1996), and editor or co-editor of four others. He has also written over 100 articles and reviews. His work focuses on the Roman empire.
