Professor Butler, who received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1972 has written The Origins of American Denominational Order (1978); The Huguenots in America: A Refugee People in New World Society (1983); Awash in a Sea of Faith: Christianizing the American People (1990); Religion in American History: A Reader (co-editor, 1997); Religion in Colonial America (a book for adolescent readers; 2000); and Becoming America: The Revolution Before 1776 (2000); and is co-author of Religion in American Life: A Short History (2002). He is writing a book on religion in modern Manhattan and teaches graduate seminars in American religious history and in early American history.

After serving as Chair of the History department, Professor Butler became the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.
