God wants your whole self…so
why should you pray with only half your brain?
Because we privilege one side of the brain over the other for certain
activities, so we also tend to pray with only half our brain. We then wonder why our prayer life
seems dry or lifeless. This workshop is designed to help us learn to pray with
our whole brain. We will use movement, breathing, music and oil pastels to
create a new pathway to prayer. No art experience is necessary—just a
willingness to allow God to be present to the parts of ourselves that may need
a little exercise. An
Art and Soul Workshop will be held on Saturday, October 28th
from 1-4:30 in the RSV room. This
workshop will be led by Ann Harriet Carew is a
professional artist and spiritual director.
If interested, there is a sign-up sheet in the Berkeley Office. Please wear comfortable and loose
clothing! Contact Megan
Hollaway if you have any questions about the workshop.

The Initiative
on Religion and Politics at Yale seeks to foster thoughtful activism, enrich scholarly
discourse, and deepen public conversation on the place of religion in public
life, both nationally and internationally. Located at Yale Divinity School, the Initiative is guided
by a coordinating committee of faculty and students from a variety of
disciplines and religious affiliations. It draws on the strengths of
intellectuals across and beyond Yale University, and of religious leaders
in New Haven and around the world. We aim to speak forcefully in the public
sphere about the social and political issues of the day. You are invited to a reception for this newly
formed initiative held in the Common Room on Monday, October 16 from 4:00-5:30. Coordinating
committee members Serene Jones, Emilie Townes, Shannon Craigo-Snell,
Diana Swancutt, Andre Willis, Harlon
Dalton, Lindell Toombs and Steven Jungkeit
will be on hand to introduce the Initiative and engage in conversation.
A panel entitled Religious
Freedom and the Pledge of Allegiance will be held on October 18, 2006 from 6
PM - 7:30 PM at Boston College (Massachusetts), Gasson
305 (Fulton Debate Room). Among the panelists is Michael Newdow, who sued the U.S.
Congress over this issue and personally argued his case before the U.S. Supreme
Court in 2004. Despite hearing the case
(Elk Grove v. Newdow), the U.S. Supreme Court
ultimately declined to rule on the issue for technical legal reasons, but Mr. Newdow has re-filed his case, which many expect to return
to the Supreme Court in the coming years for final resolution. Joining Mr. Newdow
on the panel are lawyer and social critic Wendy
Kaminer, and constitutional scholar Phillip Muñoz. Professor Alan Wolfe, Director of the Boisi Center
for Religion and American Public Life, will moderate the event. This event is free and open to the
public. An extended question and answer
period will follow the panelists’ opening remarks. For more information, please go to our
website at www.bc.edu/boisi.

Fall Service Trip to New York City: The fall service trip,
scheduled for November 3 and 4, 2006,
is a unique opportunity to serve and learn in New York City. Students will travel
together to New York, live in a small community
in a Quaker meeting house, and volunteer at several sites throughout the
city. We will serve one meal as a large
group on Friday night, and on Saturday will split into smaller groups to work
in shelters, soup kitchens and food banks all over New York. This is a great way to
meet other Yale students, perform some meaningful volunteer service, and engage
in thoughtful reflection on that service.
Previous participants have included graduate and professional students
from a variety of disciplines as well as Yale College students. Information packets and applications are
available in the chaplain's office or from Susan Olson. Registration is due
October 20, and includes a $15 deposit. That
deposit will be returned to you on the trip--making your experience free! If you have questions, please contact Susan
